As a player of a modern violin that I typically string with synthetic/perlon strings, I wanted to experiment with gut, particularly to fatten up the bottom two strings of my instrument. In recordings, I have always had a soft spot for the warm, deep, yet brilliant sound of gut strings, but never wanted to fuss with the response of tuning stability of the strings myself. Passiones are definitely stable, just as much as some synthetics after the first few days. I played a week long Christmas concert series with these on television and had no problem staying in tune, even under the hot stage lights with my profuse hand perspiration. Secondly, they are quite responsive in regards to their playability. They are not as fast as my typical dominants, but are not difficult nonetheless. They will, however, "kick back" if bowed to abruptly or with poor technique. My only complaint was that their lifespan was not as good as some sets, which is to be expected with gut. If you are a relatively experienced player in search of a soloistic gut sound, these are a valid option.
